This manual aims to honor the rights of individuals with I/DD to live self-determined autonomous lives, by providing a detailed overview of the issues related to decision-making in all its forms. Divided into 12 chapters, the manual defines and describes substitute decision-making, supportive decision-making, alternative directives, the Pennsylvania Mental Health and Intellectual Disability Act, substitute decision-making, substitute decision-making under the federal law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ) and guardianship. It highlights and describes with examples the limitations and considerations of substitute decision-making under current laws, and calls for a more enlightened approach in determining a person's capacity, competence and consent to make decisions for her/himself with appropriate and least restrictive supports.
